What to wear during a wedding in autumn?

Finding the appropriate outfit to wear for a wedding is definitely a mission. More so is the challenge when you have to bear in mind not only the dress code for the event, but also the weather specially if talking about autumn or spring, seasons where the forecast is quite unpredictable to whether it will be cold or the temperatures will rise.

Weddings are one of those celebrations that at Crowne Plaza Barcelona we are most experienced at. Throughout our entire trajectory we have received thousands of guests in our venues and have seen all sorts of outfits and styles among them. Now that at the hotel we have the new Montjuïc Terrace – an open air venue with exclusive views to the National Palace of Barcelona (MNAC), ready to organize any kind of event – as you’ll imagine a celebration of love from here is absolutely amazing.

For this reason we have collected a series of tips on this post where we have adventured into helping you pick the perfect outfit for a wedding during autumn, specially focused in women as men in general can put it together with an elegant suit and wearing a tie or bow.

Should you bring something for outerwear?
If the wedding celebration takes place at night, protocol will save you as it is defined that you should wear a long outfit. If is takes place during the day you can also apply this rule and choose some wide leg trousers or a long dress that covers all the way to your feet. For the top, choose an elegant and sophisticated garment that matches your outfit in general. You can also play with tights or a shawl in case your really doubting what the weather will be like.

Trending colours to wear in autumun
A basic rule at weddings is to not dress in white or very light colours so that you don’t eclipse the bride, and also some people may also prefer not to dress in red as this may attract too much attention. For the rest of rules when it comes to dress code they have slowly been left behind. Black is more than acceptable in these kind of celebrations and any other colour will work perfectly.

However as autumn is such a bucolic season, why not wear a shiny garment in gold or silver? If you choose a good outfit that follows style and quality materials, we’re pretty sure you will make the right choice, without standing out too much among the rest of guests or the newly weds.

Shoes
When attending a wedding during autumn shoes may also cause some concerns. What is a better choice, an open pair of sandals or closed shoes? In general it will always depend on the outfit that you are wearing, however if you are more inclined to wearing some heel straps or open shoes, it is recommended to protect yourself from the cold by wearing some tights or transparent stocking tights. It will definitely be a good idea if you also bring another pair of more comfortable closed shoes just in case it decided to rain or get colder.

Accesories
With accessories we follow the advice that “less is more”. However and just like before, the amount of accessories or jewelry that you pick such as earrings, necklace, rings, handbag or belt among others, will depend on the outfit you’re wearing, if it’s more simple or more decorated with patterns, colours or other elements. In this last second, try and wear the fewer accessories as possible so that your outfit is what really highlights.

In order to attend a wedding during autumn there are no strict rules on what to wear. Often you will find that common sense is the best option and that you are well informed before-hand as to what the weather and venue will be like. It won’t be the same if the wedding is right next to the ocean, in the countryside or up in the mountains. Once you know the location and exact date it will get much easier to pick one outfit or the other. And from then on…

Every season of the year has its own tasty seasonal dishes and Summer is not an exception. During these hot months dishes tend to be lighter and fresh, and still as tasty!

At Crowne Plaza Barcelona we know that one of the main factors to consider when looking for a new full gastronomic experience is the place. For this reason at 173 Rooftop Terrace we offer not only a selection of delicious dishes to enjoy every single bite but also a unique venue with enchanting views.

To open your appetite you can choose from the finest quality Ibérico charcuterie such as Jamón Ibérico de Bellota or a selected cheese platter full of intense flavours. For more you can also choose among our spicy bravas potatoes or some nachos with guacamole, cheese and Mexican salsa.

Honouring one of the Spanish gastronomic concepts by excellence, 173 Rooftop Terrace’ menu includes some of the best tapas and dishes to share: salmon tartar with side vegetables, barbeque chicken wings or a foie bombon with mango chutney sauce are just some of the delights that we offer.

In our new terrace menu we couldn’t miss out on fresh and light dishes such as our tuna ventresca or Ceasar salads, Salmorejo or artisan burrata with tomatoe, basil and nuts among many others.

And for those of you who prefer a warm and abundant plate you can choose from our different culinary options of meat, fish or greens.

As our special meat dish we recommend our first-class beef steak with a maturation process of 60 days and accompanied by grilled vegetables and roasted potato, although you can also choose from some some of the tastiest sandwiches with our star Burger 173, a beef burger of up to 200 grams with the chef’s special sauce, Jamón Ibérico, goat cheese and all with a brown ale beer.

If you tend to have more of a seafood palate we also have fresh fish straight from the market with natural herbal essence grilled or roasted. If you wish to go for something greener you can also try our grilled vegetables with romesco sauce, definitely a must-try!

As you might imagine we could not forget about the little ones of the family, we also have special dishes for them! Our kid’s menu has several options: from Bolognese pasta to chicken escalope, nuggets and pizza.

Are you staying in Barcelona during this Summer? Here are some cool plans to do!

Summer is always the perfect time to enjoy doing what you love: travel, visit your family, spend more time outdoors… Big cities seem empty, however it’s only an appearance! During the Summer many people still go to work and keep on with their day to day which is why we have decided to bring together some of the best plans to do in Barcelona during this Summer, for those who want to make the most of their time in the city!

Beach, water sports or swimming pool
One of Barcelona’s most valued treasures is the sea. Lucky us, specially during the Summer! The fact that we have the Mediterranean Sea so close allows us to do all sorts of water activities: paddle surf, windsurf, swimming, sailing, etc. However if getting in the sea is not really your cup of tea you can always play volleyball in the sand, beach tennis or simply sun bathe to soak in those sun rays while reading a book. To sum up, just like in many other cities Barcelona also has local and private swimming pools, another great option to feel refreshed!

Mountains and parks
Not only does Barcelona have the sea but we also are very close to the mountains. Even though they aren’t the highest of this region they are the perfect escape to go outdoors into nature. The area of Tibidabo, carretera de les Aigües or Montjuïc are perfect places to go to and enjoy being outside the city for a couple hours. If you prefer to stay in the urban area you can always go for a walk to Parc of Ciudadela, Parc of Montjuïc or any other green area in the city.

Music festivals
When the warm months roll in it is almost impossible for a day to go by in Barcelona without music. Summer festivals are some of the best summer days for locals and tourists: Barcelona Beach Festival, Cruïlla Festival, Música als Parcs, Circuit Festival, Jardins of Pedralbes Festival, summer concerts at Poble Espanyol or BAM are some of them. If you love music you should definitely take a look at some of them!

Activities and shows
The cultural offer in Barcelona is amazing, both during daytime and at night. There are all kinds of activities for everyone: open air cinema, tours around the city, museums, parks, exhibitions, nightlife… and the list could keep on!

Local neighbourhood festivities
Three of the most known local festivities in Barcelona that take place during the Summer are Fiestas of Gracia, Fiestas of Sants and Fiestas of Sant Roc. They are all local festivities that honour each of the three neighbourhoods in the city and that will welcome with open arms all visitors where you will enjoy popular local food, concerts, “castellers”, famous Catalan dance “sardanas”, magic and alternative shows… The streets simply fill up with people and fun.

To sum up, these are some of the coolest plans to enjoy in Barcelona during the Summer. In addition, Crowne Plaza Barcelona will open very soon the 173 Rooftop Terrace, the terrace in Montjuïc with the best views in Barcelona.

There is no longer any excuse to make the most of this city!

San Juan’s Eve, a night of magic and tradition

San Juan, Saint John’s Eve or Sant Joan, is one of the most expected popular celebrations in Spain of June and the Summer time in general. The eve of the 23rd of June marks the beginning of the Summer, the endless days of sun, holidays, free time and watching sunsets from a rooftop. It is also a day of meeting with friends and family and getting to share this popular tradition, which is why we decided to bring to you in this post some of the most famous traditions on the year’s shortest night in Barcelona and surroundings. Had you heard of any of them?

Fire and bonfires
Fire is one of the main characters during San Juan’s Eve, which already reveals part of this night’s traditions. This midsummer night is all about making bonfires, especially at the beach. The tradition dates back to centuries ago when there was a belief that fire symbolized the welcoming of Summer solstice.

Another tradition that still lasts through time is the thought of fire’s light and heat to drive away evil spirits, as well as extending the amount of hours a day to give the Sun more strength, as from this night on the days start becoming shorter and shorter until Fall arrives.

Make a wish whilst jumping over a bonfire
It definitely is a risky activity, not suitable for minors and only to be considered if one is fully aware of the situation and its’ risks. During the night of San Juan many are brave enough to challenge the fire and jump over the bonfire while making a wish at the same time. If it becomes true or not, that’s only a matter of luck!

Get a taste of the “Coca of San Juan” and toast with a glass of cava

The “Coca of San Juan” is one of the highlights of June 23rd. This dessert consists of a pie made out of flour covered with glazed fruit and sugar. To go with the pie it is very common to toast with a glass of cava, a traditional sparkling wine from the provinces of Barcelona and Tarragona.

Fireworks
Fireworks are also a must on this summer night of celebrations. Explosions filled with colour and spark light up the night sky forming all sorts of shapes and forms and the sound of the firecrackers will be heard from far away. An authentic performance.

Swimming in the sea at night
If you celebrate San Juan’s Eve around the coast one of the most magical traditions on this night is to go for a swim after midnight when the sea is completely dark or waiting for the sun to rise, welcoming the next day.

Music and dancing
Almost everywhere you go on this night you will find streets and beaches filled with people celebrating and concerts and music going on. Those who make their bonfire will very probably be dancing around the fire. Those who don’t, will probably also be dancing under the moonlight.

Burn what is no longer useful
Like we mentioned at the very beginning fire is one of they key elements of the night of San Juan. Many people will follow the tradition of bringing with them what is no longer useful and throw it into the fire to burn. Furniture, paintings, clothing… or even last year’s school books!

Now that you’ve learnt a bit more about some of the most typical traditions of San Juan, are you in to join any of them?

Rooftop terraces, what is there about them that we love so much?

Rooftops are a big attraction for us, it’s inevitable. In a country where the sun shines brightly it is almost hard to escape the temptation of enjoying a rooftop terrace and where better to do so than in Barcelona. For this reason, we have decided to bring you 10 reasons to why you should decide to go spend a good time in one of them and let yourself be led by its’ magic.

  1. Share moments

Spending a morning or evening in a rooftop terrace with views to the entire city is one of the best ways to share a good time with friends. Conversations, laughs, debates, ideas,… Time goes by and without realizing we have been sharing great moments that become instant memories and experiences.

  1. Toast for the good times

When you sit at a table in a rooftop bar, you will probably want to enjoy it with a drink in hand, no matter if it’s water, soda, a beer or a cocktail. And there is no better way to celebrate that moment than with a toast, exchanging looks and smiles with good company.

  1. Taste the flavours of quality

Rooftops are already attractive themselves, however if they also offer good food the positive experience exceeds any expectation. The taste of a quality dish or simply a delicious snack, it will definitely help to get everyone at the table at their best mood.

  1. Feel the sun kiss your skin

Picture yourself sun bathing in a rooftop or simply feeling the breeze and the sun kiss your skin, one of the best pleasures that nature has given us. A rooftop in Barcelona where the sun shines at its brightest sounds like the place where we would like to be now that the nice weather is around the corner. The sun gives us life!

  1. Relax and disconnection

One of the best ways to disconnect and relax is by visiting a rooftop terrace where one can feel comfortable and time flies. You can read, listen to music, talk or simply watch the scenic views from the top. It is the place where everything stops, where you can get away from any problem and simply focus on the happiness of the moment.

  1. Enjoy the views

Good views are something precious, and in big cities like Barcelona only a few can really presume of their own. It’s true… views can take your breath away and we all look to find those daydream sceneries. Either with ocean views, views to the mountain or simply to the city roofs, it is definitely somewhere to let go and enjoy.

  1. End your the day the right way… with a sunset

Sunsets are always special. Watching the sun set from somewhere privileged, like a rooftop, can turn it even more magical. For us there is no better way to end the day than with the last rays of sun, good company and in a special place.

  1. Feel the comfort

Comfort should always be one of your main priorities when deciding between different options. In the case of a rooftop terrace, who wouldn’t want to lie back in a comfy chair with a good service at your disposal for anything you need? When things are made easy, it is more than likely we will decide to enjoy more time there!

  1. The surroundings

What surrounds you is also something important to consider when choosing which rooftop terrace to go to. Somewhere beautiful and peaceful will definitely help you to take in that perfect moment.

  1. Wet your feet in the pool

A rooftop terrace with a swimming pool, can it get any better? If you have ever had the chance of getting your feet wet while the music plays and the sun shines from the very top, you know what we’re talking about. An indescribable feeling that we highly recommend.

In conclusion, these are only some of the main reasons why in Crowne Plaza Barcelona we believe that spending time in a nice rooftop terrace is definitely worth it, and the list could keep going on and on.

So what about you, have your found your dream rooftop terrace already?

Wake up with springtime to feel it skin-deep

Spring is the time of the year when everything seems to come back to life. We leave behind days of cold and dim light to enter the season of colors, the outburst of nature, the impulse to make new things and to explore the world around us. In all these moments the senses are the main focus, we live each experience getting in touch with one of them: smell, hearing, taste … our experience is more intense when we intensify the senses. It is exciting.

For this spring we propose some activities for you to feel and to live this moment of the year, in all the senses.

Wine tasting
With the spring breeze there is nothing better than having a glass of wine in a sunset with good company. And, although we are demanding with the palate, why not learning a little more of this drink that has been with us for thousands of years?

The wine tasting, apart from pleasant, is interesting. There are many characteristics that influence the good result and flavor of a good wine. If you do not know them, the experience is even more enriching. Furthermore, if you accompany the wine tasting with a cheese tasting, the moment will be sublime.

Opera concert
Music is one of the art disciplines that are lived more intensly. It can arouse intense emotions, let the tears fall or make us smile, we can listen to it in solitude or with company. Our day to day is full of moments with music, but for this time of the year we propose you to dedicate a whole afternoon or night, with intention. Focus on what the melody conveys and get in and merge with all the notes.

Massage
Touch is often one of the senses that we have less present but that unconsciously gives us a lot of information: “coffee burns or the scarf is soft” are perceptions that we get thanks to the touch. But not only the activities of our day to day connect us with touch, with a single caress we can have chills all over the body. To awaken this sense we propose a massage session or a visit to the Spa  so that, in addition to relaxing, it will help you to enter into consciousness with the touch and your body.

Smell fragances
The fragrances have a lot of presence in our society but also, the smell is one of the senses that awakens the memories: moments of our childhood, places and even people. Smell has a magical power. At this time of year we would like you to refresh smells and relive memories through the fragrances so that you smile when relating a smell with a moment, a very special bond of ideas.

Go to the cinema
This is one of the activities that we have more assimilated but often we don’t consider that, leaving aside the sound and the soundtracks, in the cinema we work intensely the sight. The visual strenght that movies have and the impact that a poweful image involves has a lot of weight. For this Spring, we propose you to go to the cinema and delight you with well-crafted scenes and images.

Which are the best restaurants of Montjuïc? We give you a list of the most recognized places near Crowne Plaza Barcelona

Barcelona is an endless city. In addition to its architecture, cultural movement, a nice weather and a good location in the Mediterranean, the restlessness and curiosity for the gastronomy of the locals and the new arrivals has no limits.

In the “Ciudad Condal” we are fortunate to have some of the most renowned chefs in the whole country, and not only that, but other cook artists have chosen Barcelona to delight everyone with their recipes and dishes.

At Crowne Plaza Barcelona we know that the culinary offer in our city, and in our area, is wide and of quality. That’s why apart from out restaurant El Mall, we recommend other places and restaurants that treat every dish with care and attention.

Hoja Santa y Niño Viejo

Although they are to different restaurants, they share premises and origin: the recipes offered are based on Mexican cuisine. Albert Adrià, the brother of the chef Ferran Adrià, is the one who created and simmered these two restaurants, always maintaining his vision of “haute neighborhood cuisine”

Both places are part of elBarri, a group of restaurants created from the talent of the brothers and chefs Adrià, along with Pedro, Juan Carlos and Borja Iglesias, also brothers and first line chefs.

Niño Viejo has a more informal and relaxed character: a Mexican canteen or taquería without a tasting menu but with a delicate presentation, with contemporary additions.

Hoja Santa is categorized as an elegant restaurant with slightly more colorful and elaborate results – without losing sight of the fact that both places are delicious – where, undoubtedly, there are influences of elBulli, the restaurant which during three consecutive years (2007-2009) received the recognition of the “Better restaurant of the world”. Some of its specialties are Antojitos, Tacos and Los Moles although the listing is long.

Mano Rota
Mano Rota is located in the area of Poble Sec ad offers fusion cuisine served mostly in the bars, one of the most characteristic elements of the local, although tables for two are also present.

The chefs, Bernat Bermudo and Oswaldo Brito, strive to stand out from the usual and offer diner guests intense flavors and surprising combinations, thus avoiding plain dishes without emotion. The products are of quality, of season and of proximity: many of the ingredients come from Barcelona or surroundings. This, added to the textures and nuances worked in all the food, gives the dish an international character, mainly starting from the Peruvian cuisine.

Tickets Bar
Like Niño Viejo and Hoja Santa, Tickets is part of the group elBarri, which also includes other well-known places in the Paral·lel area such as Pakta, Bodega 1900 or Enigma.

The place offers dishes based on avant-garde cuisine but always reflecting in all its culinary creations its emblem of “La Vida Tapa!”, a concept that clearly shapes the cuisine of the land. The variety of dishes is wide and the menu changes according to the season. But we can assure that you will love any of the stews and sauces.

Casa Xica

Casa Xica is oriented to a homemade menu but not less interesting. It is one of the jewels of Poblesec that besides serving products of proximity travels to other countries like China and Japan until taking them to your plate. The Asian character is breathed in almost all their creations and can be used as a passport to later taste the ecological wine included in the menu. The quality of the products is exceptional, besides the local is cozy, and it is necessary to reserve table if you want to go at night! The harmony of their dishes plays an important role in the whole experience, and also they renew the gastronomic offer often.

Enigma

It is another of the locals that is also part of the elBarri group. Enigma is the newborn of ElBulli’s offspring, largely serving as a laboratory to transport its culinary ideas to the rest of the group’s restaurants and one of its main features is that serves an amount of twenty diner guests, no more.

The approach of the restaurant and its design is thought to surprise and deviate from what is usual, so the mysterious decoration and surprise are one of the main ingredients, together with the quality of food and its spectacular presentation.

espai Kru
espai Kru  by Rías de Galicia is the main identity of this restaurant. Located very close to Plaza España, it is next to another of the most recognized restaurants of the area with a similar gastronomic offer, the Pakta.

espai Kru has a tour of dishes that travel from Galicia to Japan. The presentation of the delicacies is excellent and the quality of the ingredients outstanding. Definitely a recommended place to go, at least once in a lifetime. The experience deserves a visit, and more bearing in mind that the restaurant was awarded the Sol Repsol in 2016, a recognition and symbol of culinary excellence in the gastronomy of the country.

Filigrana
The concept of the restaurant follows the line of classic, elegant and careful attention to details. The specialty of the Filigrana specialty is grilled meat, although the fish or the tapas are also delicious. It is the right place for a business meal or even for a romantic dinner, it meets all requirements. In addition to its gastronomic qualities, the premises have a privileged terrace overlooking Plaza España and Montjuïc.

Oleum
Oleum Oleum is located in one of the most special places in Barcelona: the interior of the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) from where it has a panoramic view of the privileged city.
Oleum counts on gastronomic advice by Fina Puigdevall, chef of the restaurant LES COLS of the city of Olot, with ** Michelin. Its menu includes some dishes based on modernism and others from romanticism, for the most tender and delicate evenings. The ingredients that are used in the kitchen are of high quality, based, above all, on Mediterranean cuisine.

In Saint Valentine’s Day, believe in love again: 7 tips for your first date

What do singles do on Valentine’s Day? Very good question. We have been inquiring and we have discovered that there are many ways to spend the 14th of February when you don’t have love commitments. There are those who lock themselves at home so that they can’t see couples walking their happiness around, others go out to reaffirm their conviction that they live better alone, others take advantage to stay with their other single friends and there are those who think it is a good day to have a first date.

If you are single and the option that convinced you the most is the last one, continue reading this post, because there are 7 tips to help you know what to do in any situation of a first date:

  • First: always greet with two kisses. Do not let prudence take you to lengthen your arm, because a handshake is the worst start for any date.
  • The most important thing in a first date is to avoid the awkward silences. That’s why it’s better to leave the house with prepared conversation topics: a nice anecdote in the restaurant where you are having dinner, some funny comment about the waiter, questions – never too personal – that show some interest or a selection of three or four short stories about your life.
  • An important clarification: it is not necessary that all the anecdotes you tell are strictly adhering to reality. In a first date, hyperbole for comic or dramatic ends is socially accepted.
  • PROHIBITED topics: religion, politics and football.
  • Never propose to share dishes. You don’t know the tastes of the other person and, if they are different from yours, you will spend time trying to find something that you both like – that’s in case you find it. It’s better that each one has its own food and focus the conversation in topics which you may share.
  • If you have the date in the restaurant of Crowne Plaza Barcelona, you can count on our waiters to accelerate the moment of the desserts and the bill in case something goes wrong.
  • And last, but not least, do not improvise the farewell. Excuse a moment and reflect for two minutes in front of the mirror if you want a second appointment or not. And whatever decision you take, be direct: it’s the only way to avoid the dangerous “we’ll see each other …” that ends with everyone waiting for the other to call and nobody ever calls.

But above all, if you want a first date to go well, dare to believe in love again! With the right attitude and our advice, your Valentine’s date will be exactly as you had dreamed it.
