At Crowne Plaza Barcelona we believe in a better world. Which is why we have brought to you the different iniciatives and projects that year after year we collaborate in!

Crowne Plaza Barcelona isn’t just a hotel in the Condal City. It is also a firm that throughout the year supports different actions based on social, cultural and sustainable values to look after the world that surrounds us. Here are some of our initiatives that took place during 2017!

These projects are carried out throughout the whole year as we firmly believe that by playing a small part we will together achieve important changes in the environment and our society. The list is long, so let’s go for it!

What social actions have we carried out at Crowne Plaza Barcelona?

Regarding social activities, we focus mainly in projects to fight hunger and dehydration.

Crowne Plaza Barcelona received the Rotary Club certificate for having donated 2.350 solidary menus throughout 2016 under the initiative “Alimentos para Necesitados” – A.L.P.A.N (Foods for Needed) who also belongs to the club. Furthermor,e we collaborated with the catalan initiative “La Fam no fa vacances” (Hunger doesn’t get holidays), where we collected 175kg of food to help the most needed during the summer. “BCN Comparteix el menjar” (Barcelona shares their food) belongs to Nutrició sense Fronteres, another initiative in which we participated by providing hotel meals to social dinings.

We also participated with “Restaurantes contra el hambre” (Restaurants against hunger), a solidary initiative by “Acción contra el hambre” (Action against hunger) together with the Spanish Hostelry Federation, fighting against childhood malnutrition. Crowne Plaza joined the Project by providing 2€ per each dish consumed at the hotel’s restaurant El Mall.

Oxfam Intermon Trailwalker in Girona: for the second year in a row, part of Crowne Plaza Barcelona’s team joined this 100km trailwalk collecting more than 1.500€ to donate to this organization. An action put together for women and girls that each day have to walk for hours in the search of safe drinking water. We also cooperated with the program “IHG shelter in a storm” by IHG in an organized “Nordic Hike” in Montjuïc, to support the fight against the effects of natural disasters.

All of this without forgetting about the toiletries that each of our rooms has, all of which are 100% fair trade.

How about cultural initiatives?

During Christmas a big part of Crowne Plaza Barcelona’s team donated their gift sets to the neighbourhood of Poble Sec, to a catalan NGO “Bona Voluntat en Acció” (Good Will in Action) which works to erradicate poverty in the fourth world. Aside from that we also gave toys to the little ones of this same area, because Santa doesn’t forget about them! We collaborated with this organization in another project “Hotel Tapa Tour”, where they organized a tapas tour and all money went directly to the cause.

The “Interhotel Games” are Charity Olympics where several 4 and 5 star hotels participate to collect funds. This 2017 the money was destined to “Nutrición sin Fronteras” (Nutrition without borders) and their project “Barcelona comparteix el menjar” (Barcelona shares their food).

Crowne Plaza Barcelona was the main sponsor at their charity event “Cena Solidaria Esclat”, a charity dinner where all funds were destined to professional integration and personal development of people with cerebral paralysis.

Regarding the big screen, Crowne Plaza Fira-Center also collaborated with the 4th Edition of the Asian Cinema Festival in Barcelona, organized by Casa Asia, who gave out a honorary prize to the movie “Redha” for the treatment and sensibility towards autism. Related to this illness, to celebrate the International Day of Awareness about Autism we illuminated our main façade in blue and joined the campaign #ConnectatAlBlau (#connectedtoblue).

Furthermore, our El Mall restaurant participated in the latest version of the Barcelona Restaurant Week with an elaborated tasting menu. Included in the price was a solidary euro which was then destined to ”Menudos Corazones Foundation”, a music therapy project for pediatric ICU’s.

In terms of energetic efficiency and sustainability, what have you done?

tesla-crowne-plaza-barcelonaTesla chargers for electric cars

We obtained the IHG Green Engage Level 1 Certificate, which means that all of our hotel’s facilities are designed under sustainable parameters and accredits us for one of the best practices in matters of saving energy and costs.

We also received the Quality Ecoleader Certificate Platinum Level by TripAdvisor that promotes the reutilization of bedding and towels, the use of energy-efficient bulbs throughout the hotel, a cautious control of the use of A/C and heaters, recycling… among many other aspects.

As in the tourism of Barcelona, we also contributed with our grain of sand by participating in the initiative “Barcelona Sustainable Tourism” where different projects are carried out related to sustainability, environmental and socio-economical matters surrounding the city’s tourism.

Our latest news regarding energy efficiency is that since last October we have added in our hotel two Tesla chargers, the number one company in premium electric cars, which are free to use and completely compatible with any electric vehicle from hotel’ guests.

As you can see this is a summary of the actions that we have been contributing with at Crowne Plaza Barcelona throughout 2017, and there will still be more. Most important of all, we are determined to keep on participating in solidary actions that fight for social causes, equality, the environment and culture, as we strongly believe in our values and the kind of world we want to be living in.

Black Friday 2017: get ahead of all the Christmas shopping and benefit with these tricks!

If this upcoming Christmas you’d love to save some money and avoid the hassle of late Christmas shopping, you should mark on your calendar the 24th of November. And if you’re asking yourself why…it’s because Black Friday will be here!

This day began to be celebrated in the USA during the 1960’s, exactly the day before of Thanksgiving and a bit earlier than Christmas. Slowly it began to expand worldwide until nowadays it has become one of the most comercial days of the year with the best discount offers.

That is precisely why it is a day designed to catch the best offers and plan ahead your Christmas shopping, not only get what you’re looking for, but also get the best deal!

Therefore, how can we make the best of this day and benefit from those deals before the Christmas celebrations? Here are some of our tips that will definitely help you out:

  • Make a list and write down what you’re looking for: a few days before (or months), make a list with all those gadgets you want to buy and pin down those stores or websites that have them. Also, have a look at their prices and write that down…it wouldn’t be the first time that the previous days to Black Friday some stores take advantage and increase their prices so that when the day comes, they are selling at the original Price with what users believe is a “discount”.
  • Shop online: take your time previously to search online for what you’re looking and add it to your shopping cart so that the purchase can be made quicker. To ensure that you can do this, sign up on each online shop so it’ll be easier for you. And don’t forget about adding any discount codes!
  • Be careful with your credit card: even online shopping one may find that there are thieves online who create fake online stores to get your card information and steal. Also, bear in mind your connection and try to avoid using public Wi-Fi, as there is more chance that phising can occur.
  • Compare between brands: we are pretty sure that by doing a previous comparison you’ll already see different prices between brands.
  • Dress comfortably and wake up early: even though many of Black Friday’s deals are online, there are also many shops in the streets that join on this day. If you prefer to shop in person, make sure you wear some comfortable shoes and head to the stores during the time when less people go (working hours, lunch time…).
  • Pay attention to the return policies: it could happen that with the excitement of shopping you may not look previously at the shopping and return policies of that product. Take a close look! Sometimes with good deals you don’t have the chance to give it back or simply change it for another product… therefore think carefully before buying if it’s worth it or not.

With all this information and your intuition we’re pretty sure that this Christmas you’ll manage to make all your loved ones happy with some cool presents at the best price!

A talk with Pau Santamaroa, one of the most renowned grower’s and land produce’ providers by gourmet restaurants in Spain

Now that we are venturing into autumn, Mother Earth has begun to offer many different products compared to those during the summer months. The look of our pantry has changed and we slowly transition from colourful and exotic flavours to eating more inviting ingredients, subtle yet very intense.

Taking this as our starting point, today we want to dig deeper into Pau Santamaria’s world, one of our most famous vegetable grower and provider that we currently have nationally. His knowledge towards the Earth’s products comes mainly from the passion that his dad passed on to him: deceased chef Santi Santamaria, owner of the Can Fabes restaurant already closed down and one of the most awarded Michelin Star chef in Spain together with Ferran Adrià, catalogued as one of the world’s best chefs.

Pau, where does your passion for the Earth’s products come from?
My dad was who passed on to me all his enthusiasm for cooking and the foods that the Earth gifts us. Since I was a small kid I lived through this passion and was always surrounded by mushroom-pickers and farmers from Montseny.

How did you start the project of distributing products to so many locals?
My wife, my father-in-low and myself are who all started this project. We were looking to reinvent ourselves professionally and it all began when the Via Veneto restaurant, with a Michelin Start, ordered us our very first command the day after I had personally visited them with a basket full of fresh vegetables for them to try and get to know our product. Ever since they turned on the engines and more restaurants started coming to us.

What is your secret to serve to high range restaurants in Barcelona and other regions?
Everything we produce is organic, and therefore the flavours and quality of the product we serve is excellent and very well taken care of.

Mushrooms are a typical product of autumn and you know that from first hand. Could you recommend any recipes using this ingredient?
In this case I’d definitely recommend one of my dad’s recipes, Santi Santamaria: Red Prawn Raviolis with “Ceps” oil, one of the most characteristic species of wild mushrooms in our region. In general this dish consists of serving the ravioli wrapped with the red prawn, and using as condiment glazed onion and mushrooms. Then, all you have to do is cover it with oil flavoured with these wild mushrooms, “ceps”. The result is extraordinary.

In what new growing techniques have you been part of? Could you give us some details?
One of the most relevant is the re-discovery of the hitlacoche, a fungus that grows in corn fields. In many countries it is considered a plague, however in Mexico it is consumed and even considered a gourmet product. Now we’ve discovered how to grow it here too. This year we’ve been growing a lot of green chickpeas, an ingredient that has been very solicited by the restaurants kitchens.

We would love to have kept asking Pau more questions but it’ll have to wait for next time. Until then, we’re pretty sure Pau will keep on adding value and knowledge to the agriculture sector.

If after reading our post you’d like to taste some of these delicious autumn flavours we’ve been talking about, come visit El Mall restaurant at Crowne Plaza Barcelona and we’ll surprise you with all the different flavours and emotions that this season’s dishes will evoke. Come and visit us!

What to wear during a wedding in autumn?

Finding the appropriate outfit to wear for a wedding is definitely a mission. More so is the challenge when you have to bear in mind not only the dress code for the event, but also the weather specially if talking about autumn or spring, seasons where the forecast is quite unpredictable to whether it will be cold or the temperatures will rise.

Weddings are one of those celebrations that at Crowne Plaza Barcelona we are most experienced at. Throughout our entire trajectory we have received thousands of guests in our venues and have seen all sorts of outfits and styles among them. Now that at the hotel we have the new Montjuïc Terrace – an open air venue with exclusive views to the National Palace of Barcelona (MNAC), ready to organize any kind of event – as you’ll imagine a celebration of love from here is absolutely amazing.

For this reason we have collected a series of tips on this post where we have adventured into helping you pick the perfect outfit for a wedding during autumn, specially focused in women as men in general can put it together with an elegant suit and wearing a tie or bow.

Should you bring something for outerwear?
If the wedding celebration takes place at night, protocol will save you as it is defined that you should wear a long outfit. If is takes place during the day you can also apply this rule and choose some wide leg trousers or a long dress that covers all the way to your feet. For the top, choose an elegant and sophisticated garment that matches your outfit in general. You can also play with tights or a shawl in case your really doubting what the weather will be like.

Trending colours to wear in autumun
A basic rule at weddings is to not dress in white or very light colours so that you don’t eclipse the bride, and also some people may also prefer not to dress in red as this may attract too much attention. For the rest of rules when it comes to dress code they have slowly been left behind. Black is more than acceptable in these kind of celebrations and any other colour will work perfectly.

However as autumn is such a bucolic season, why not wear a shiny garment in gold or silver? If you choose a good outfit that follows style and quality materials, we’re pretty sure you will make the right choice, without standing out too much among the rest of guests or the newly weds.

Shoes
When attending a wedding during autumn shoes may also cause some concerns. What is a better choice, an open pair of sandals or closed shoes? In general it will always depend on the outfit that you are wearing, however if you are more inclined to wearing some heel straps or open shoes, it is recommended to protect yourself from the cold by wearing some tights or transparent stocking tights. It will definitely be a good idea if you also bring another pair of more comfortable closed shoes just in case it decided to rain or get colder.

Accesories
With accessories we follow the advice that “less is more”. However and just like before, the amount of accessories or jewelry that you pick such as earrings, necklace, rings, handbag or belt among others, will depend on the outfit you’re wearing, if it’s more simple or more decorated with patterns, colours or other elements. In this last second, try and wear the fewer accessories as possible so that your outfit is what really highlights.

In order to attend a wedding during autumn there are no strict rules on what to wear. Often you will find that common sense is the best option and that you are well informed before-hand as to what the weather and venue will be like. It won’t be the same if the wedding is right next to the ocean, in the countryside or up in the mountains. Once you know the location and exact date it will get much easier to pick one outfit or the other. And from then on…

Coming back from holidays isn’t easy and at Crowne Plaza Barcelona we know it. Getting back into routine and returning to our day to day life after a long period of relaxing and enjoying, can make it quite uphill for everyone. Either if you have been travelling around the world this summer or if you’ve simply stayed at home resting, here are some of our tips to combat those post-vacation blues and try and make your life back to routine as easy as posible!

1. Frame your memories
Pick up a pen and paper to express everything that you’ve lived. Put together your words with photographs, write down the name of the song that was playing in that moment and make sure you collect those special moments that will make you smile.

2. Organize fun plans
Going back to work after the holidays can make us feel a bit down. For that reason it is important to have short-term plans that will keep us motivated throughout the following months. A weekend getaway, dinner with friends or throwing a party are great options!

3. Get back on a schedule
During the holidays your timetable is probably way different to the usual. We get to go to bed late, wake up even later, eat whenever and more than once such a relaxed state will take us to sleep early. So before you go back to your routine, try and organize your days so that you slowly get back to normal hours and having your usual schedule.

4. Ten minutes in bed
When you start again with your routine don’t start with a hurry. Make sure you stay 10 minutes more in bed when you wake up in order to slowly start your day, meditate and steel yourself for a new day with new responsibilities and challenges. We’re sure that starting your days like this will make them much easier and pleasant!

5. Piano, piano… on your first day back at work
Take your first day back at work easy and with patience, and don’t let stress take over your workspace. Pay attention to changes and movements that have occurred while you were away and confront every situation with your best energy!

6. Organize your tasks
After having been away for a long time it is basic to start by organizing your ideas. Make sure before you get started with anything else that you organize your tasks so that nothing skips your hands. In your notebook, a calendar or on your phone, it will definitely be of much help.

7. Move your body!
Being active again is essential, so make sure you go back to doing sport in order to burn that energy and combat those blues after the holidays. It works!

8. Eat healthy
Eating a healthy and balanced diet will not only benefit us but it will help us feel good with ourselves too. Leave aside for a while those drinks, vermouths, beers, snacks and ice creams and fill your fridge and pantry with fresh fruit, veggies, meat or fish.

9. Moderate caffeine
Caffeine works to wake us up but an excessive consumption can lead us to have more stress and anxiety. By moderating your intake of coffee or tea it will enable you to get back to work without any alterations or extra nervousness.

10. Think positive
Yes, the holidays are over but that shouldn’t be such a big drama! Think positive thoughts: “Today the sun is shining bright”, “I’m so ready to take over the world!” or “I can’t wait to see all my friends!” will definitely help to bring a smile to your face and fight any negative impacts.

As you can see these are just some of the tips that will get you back on track and combat those post-holiday blues. The secret lies in listening to yourself and doing what your body really asks for in order to recover your personal wellbeing. Slowly this path will take you to have a permanent smile when you wake up and go back to your everyday routine.

Barcelona welcomes another year the Fiestas de la Mercè, but what is the origin of this local celebration?

The Virgin of la Mercè is the most popular patroness of Barcelona, because for those of you who didn’t know, yes we have more than one! Together with the Virgin Eulalia, co-patroness of the Condal City who for many centuries was the only one who had this figure, they are the metropolis patronesses.

And you might be wondering, how come Barcelona have two patronesses?

The history that links these two figures goes back to beginnings of the 4th century when the roman emperor Diocleciano ordered to persecute the Christian faith that was threatening the cult to the Roman Empire.

The legend tells that Santa Eulalia revealed against the persecution towards Christians in Barcelona and her punishment was devastating. Emperor Diocleciano’s men captured and tortured her until Santa Eulalia finally died, after resisting being put inside a wineskin filled with shard elements and was thrown down a steep street of the city without compassion or regrets.

Santa Eulalia was finally crucified, however she managed to impress all the spectators with her bravery during the punishment, where something incredible happened… As the legend tells, right at the moment of her death her soul rose flying from her mouth in the shape of a white pigeon.

The history and courage that Santa Eulalia showed shocked the entire city of Barcelona in a way that made her a heroine and the Condal City named her patroness of Barcelona.

Centuries later in 1687, something happened that completely changed the course of the city’s history. A terrible locust infestation arrived in Barcelona and the locals desperately prayed to the Virgin of la Mercè for her to save their streets, promising that if she did they would name her patroness of the city. Santa Mercè saved Barcelona from the locust catastrophe and in 1868 Pope Pio IX named the Virgin of la Mercè patroness of the Condal City, completely eclipsing the existing patroness Santa Eulalia.

However fellow devotees of Santa Eulalia weren’t very happy with this decision, as they weren’t forgetting about the sacrifice that their early patroness had done centuries before. So that is how finally both virgins became patronesses of the city at the same time.

From that moment onwards the celebration of Santa Mercè on the 24th of September gained more and more spotlight. With the arrival of democracy on the 20th century this local celebration was proclaimed as the most popular and renowned in the city, as it united all of Barcelona’s neighbourhoods together that until the moment had been independent from one another.

Nowadays the fiestas de la Mercè are still one of Barcelona’s most popular festivities as they also represent the closing of the summer. However, the day of Santa Eulalia has also got its’ celebration day on the 12th of February, also known as Barcelona’s winter celebrations, in honour of the first patroness who has dethroned from her limelight in Barcelona.

There is an anecdote that legend tells that every 24th of September, the day of Santa Mercè, it rains in the Condal City. The popular culture believes these are Santa Eulalia’s tears, who cries in grief for having been delegated from her role and eclipsed by the Virgin of la Mercè.

No one knows the absolute truth about the drops that fall during these days, but if you are planning on celebrating this festivity in September plan beforehand to bring an umbrella with you before going out to the streets. You will never know if Santa Eulalia will let her tears drop over Barcelona or if it will simply end up raining…

Tips and advantages of sun bathing this summer in Barcelona, and getting a tan like nobody else!

When Summer arrives it is usual that we spend much more time outdoors: whether it is at the beach, in the mountain, doing sport or just relaxing at a terrace, which is why we all tend to get tan. And one of the best ways that we can think of sun bathing is by doing it in the new rooftop terrace at Crowne Plaza Barcelona.

In this post we have collected some of the advantages and tips for you to enjoy the best moments of this summer in 173 Rooftop Terrace.

Protect yourself!
Sunscreen is a basic you can’t forget. It is essential to protect your skin from the sun rays, specially between 12 and 4 pm as it is when it hits harder. Furthermore, it is important that you apply it on your body half an hour before exposing it to the sun and repeat the process several times to avoid unnecessary sun burns.

Tanning kit
When you have the intention of sunbathing, whether it’s at the beach, countryside or in a swimming pool, there are certain elements you also can’t forget. As we said before sun screen tops the list however you should also consider: sunglasses, a towel, flip flops, a hat, a book or magazine, headphones, some fruit, … and anything else you can think of to keep you busy under the sun!

Hydrate
Before getting under the sun you must check if you have water with you to keep yourself hydrated throughout the day. By drinking small sips your skin and body will appreciate it! And if water doesn’t convince you, you can also try one of our healthy juices and beverages at 173 Rooftop Terrace.

Natural beauty
Don’t expose your skin to the sun if you are wearing any chemical products on your face or body such as make up, deodorant or lotion. It’s also not a good idea if you are wearing perfume or cologne… all of these products can cause sunspots on your skin!

Step by step
After Winter where we have spent days and months wearing big cozy jumpers and long jeans, our skin hasn’t been producing any melanin for which it tends to be much more pale than usual. When the summer arrives and the hours of sun increase it is highly recommended to start exposing your skin to the sun in small dosis, in order to prepare your skin and be capable of spending an entire day at the beach without harming it.

Smiles and happiness
Vitamin D is one of the main substances that our body gets from the sun and it definitely has a big positive impact on us, helping to improve our mood. What better way to absorb some of that happiness vitamin than in 173 Rooftop Terrace? Just because of its’ views, the stillness you can breathe and the comfort that it offers, it will increase your serotonin to the maximum level!

There are many places from which we can enjoy the rays of sun but if you add to it somewhere nice and comfortable, with amazing views and the best services at your reach… 173 Rooftop Terrace at Crowne Plaza Barcelona is your tiny oasis in the middle of the city. Don’t wait any longer and come and visit us for the best sunsets in town!

Are you staying in Barcelona during this Summer? Here are some cool plans to do!

Summer is always the perfect time to enjoy doing what you love: travel, visit your family, spend more time outdoors… Big cities seem empty, however it’s only an appearance! During the Summer many people still go to work and keep on with their day to day which is why we have decided to bring together some of the best plans to do in Barcelona during this Summer, for those who want to make the most of their time in the city!

Beach, water sports or swimming pool
One of Barcelona’s most valued treasures is the sea. Lucky us, specially during the Summer! The fact that we have the Mediterranean Sea so close allows us to do all sorts of water activities: paddle surf, windsurf, swimming, sailing, etc. However if getting in the sea is not really your cup of tea you can always play volleyball in the sand, beach tennis or simply sun bathe to soak in those sun rays while reading a book. To sum up, just like in many other cities Barcelona also has local and private swimming pools, another great option to feel refreshed!

Mountains and parks
Not only does Barcelona have the sea but we also are very close to the mountains. Even though they aren’t the highest of this region they are the perfect escape to go outdoors into nature. The area of Tibidabo, carretera de les Aigües or Montjuïc are perfect places to go to and enjoy being outside the city for a couple hours. If you prefer to stay in the urban area you can always go for a walk to Parc of Ciudadela, Parc of Montjuïc or any other green area in the city.

Music festivals
When the warm months roll in it is almost impossible for a day to go by in Barcelona without music. Summer festivals are some of the best summer days for locals and tourists: Barcelona Beach Festival, Cruïlla Festival, Música als Parcs, Circuit Festival, Jardins of Pedralbes Festival, summer concerts at Poble Espanyol or BAM are some of them. If you love music you should definitely take a look at some of them!

Activities and shows
The cultural offer in Barcelona is amazing, both during daytime and at night. There are all kinds of activities for everyone: open air cinema, tours around the city, museums, parks, exhibitions, nightlife… and the list could keep on!

Local neighbourhood festivities
Three of the most known local festivities in Barcelona that take place during the Summer are Fiestas of Gracia, Fiestas of Sants and Fiestas of Sant Roc. They are all local festivities that honour each of the three neighbourhoods in the city and that will welcome with open arms all visitors where you will enjoy popular local food, concerts, “castellers”, famous Catalan dance “sardanas”, magic and alternative shows… The streets simply fill up with people and fun.

To sum up, these are some of the coolest plans to enjoy in Barcelona during the Summer. In addition, Crowne Plaza Barcelona will open very soon the 173 Rooftop Terrace, the terrace in Montjuïc with the best views in Barcelona.

There is no longer any excuse to make the most of this city!
